Ugandan Diaspora Embraces PLU as New Chapters Open
The support for the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) is gaining momentum within the Ugandan diaspora community. The organization has seen the establishment of several new chapters in various countries across Europe, the Middle East, and North America, showcasing the widespread embrace of PLU.
As a civic organization that values inclusivity and unity, PLU aims to unite Ugandans from diverse backgrounds, regardless of their political beliefs or religious affiliations.
Following the appointment of Chairman Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba as Chief of Defence Forces, there were concerns about the organization's future, with doubts arising about his availability to lead PLU.
However, the recent selection of new leaders and the clarification of roles have reinvigorated PLU, leading to the resurgence of activities such as football tournaments and community fundraising efforts.
The PLU leadership and members have been promoting a message centered on patriotism, solidarity, and a firm stance against corruption.
Mr Michael Katungi, PLU’s Commissioner for External Affairs, highlighted the establishment of chapters in various countries, including Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and several nations in the Middle East, Europe, and North America. Mr Katungi says these chapters are currently led by interim chairpersons and committees composed of dedicated volunteers.
In the US for example, Mr Katungi explained that the PLU concept and ideology “is like a wild fire — we launched the Pacific Region chapter three days ago, and we are doing South East in two weeks culminating into a PLU national convention in July in Chicago”.
The growing presence of PLU across the globe underscores the commitment of the Ugandan diaspora to uphold the organization's values and contribute positively to their homeland and communities worldwide.
