President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has called on the people of Karamoja to adopt commercial agriculture as the primary strategy to overcome poverty and achieve sustainable development in the region.

Speaking during a media briefing at State Lodge Morulinga in Moroto District, the President emphasized the transformative potential of commercial agriculture, describing it as a broad-based solution that integrates other economic sectors to address the region’s challenges.

“Commercial agriculture is the mass entry point for Karamoja. It not only empowers the people but also guarantees sustainable development for the region,” Museveni said.

He highlighted the Parish Development Model (PDM) as a key initiative for inclusive growth. Under the program, the government allocates UGX 100 million annually to each participating parish, with plans to increase funding based on its success. “If it works, we will add more money to ensure more people benefit,” he noted.

Museveni outlined additional strategies to tackle socio-economic issues in Karamoja, including free education introduced in 1996, which aims to improve literacy and empower communities. He also prioritized water access for agriculture and livestock, emphasizing its importance in pacifying the region.

The President linked initiatives like the PDM and education to efforts in combating insecurity caused by illicit arms. While highlighting opportunities in construction, manufacturing, and mining, he stressed that agriculture remains the most viable path to economic transformation for the majority.

Museveni revealed the government’s plans to explore industrial ventures, noting the potential to generate $900 million annually from mining activities. On resolving land disputes between landowners and miners, he advocated for coexistence. “If the two cannot work together, the government will compensate the landowner, allowing mining to proceed without conflict. After mining, the land can be reclaimed,” he explained.
