Makerere: Guild Leadership Suspended, Polls Cancelled After Deadly NUP-FDC Violence
The Chairperson of Makerere University Mrs. Lorna Magara has on behalf of Council issued a directive to suspend Makerere University Students Guild and the ongoing guild elections, following subsequent violent activities in the guild electoral process in which a student was stabbed and bled to death.
The student who is said to have come to show solidarity with his OB was reportedly stabbed using a sharp object believed to be a broken bottle.
The deceased is said to have left his university - UCU to canvass support for his FDC friend with whom they studies at Mbarara High School.
However chaos broke out at the Makerere Rugby grounds where all guild candidates were supposed to speak to their voters.
Sources told this website that all the students had gathered to listen to the candidates as is always the practices but violent clashes between the FDC and NUP camps broke out resulting in the death of the student.
"May His Soul Rest in eternal Peace🙏🙏What hurts even the most is that he is a UCU student 🥺🥺🥺😔😔who had come to support his OB Justus of the FDC camp," a journalism student at Makerere tweeted under the name Cynthia Kim.
According to a statement issued by Mrs Magara, a Council meeting will be held to decide on a way forward regarding the guild leadership and elections, both of which have been indefinitely suspended. See details below.
