This weekend in La Liga is all about the latest edition of ‘El Clasico’, the most famous rivalry in all of club football, as Barcelona host Real Madrid at Camp Nou on the afternoon of Sunday 24 October. While the Blaugrana have endured a difficult start to the season both domestically and in Europe, Los Blancos have also flattered to deceive at times, though they have shown some encouraging signs of promise under Carlo Ancelotti.
However, the Italian is wary of his team’s “wrong attitude”, which sprung up in defeats to Sherriff and Espanyol just prior to the international break, and he will be determined to ensure that no such shortcomings are on show for the Clasico.
Barca, meanwhile, desperately need a big victory to boost morale and belief, with the Blaugrana already looking in danger of becoming an ‘also ran’ in La Liga this season. “It is a complicated situation. We’re suffering, I have to be honest about that,” said veteran defender Gerard Pique. “These are difficult times, we have not experienced them before. The atmosphere in the dressing room is very good and we want to turn it around.”
With one or both of Barcelona and Real set to drop points, title rivals Atletico Madrid will be looking to capitalise, but face a tough test of their own later on Sunday against high-flying Real Sociedad, who will be looking to underline their ambitions with a strong showing at the Wanda Metropolitano.
Atletico manager Diego Simeone, though, will have confidence in his team’s ability to tough out a win, especially with a capacity stadium backing them: “Football has missed people and people have missed football, so seeing the stadium full again was exciting,” he said after a big win over Barca before the international break.
Perhaps the biggest winners in the title picture may end up being Sevilla, who have a very winnable home game against Levante on Saturday, while another team to watch out for is Osasuna, who have enjoyed an excellent start to the campaign and will target another three points when they open the round at home to Granada on Friday night.
No rival can compete with SuperSport’s coverage. Our viewers on DStv and GOtv enjoy an unrivalled selection of football from around the world!
